The Dunstable branch of the University of the Third Age was started in September 1999 and has become one of more than a thousand independent U3As that form the very successful Third Age Trust (a non-profit making Registered Charity which started in 1983) in which members can pursue lifelong learning in an informal and friendly atmosphere.

The objects of the U3A are to advance  education and in particular the education of people not in full time gainful employment who are in their Third Age (being the period of time after the first age of childhood dependence and the second age of full time employment and/or parental responsibility) residing in Dunstable and its surrounding locality.

U3A is a self-help organization that offers all retired people an opportunity to share their interests, skills and knowledge in a variety of creative, educational and leisure activities. A group consists of one or more members who have a particular interest or expertise in a subject and a number of other members wishing to meet and share that knowledge. It sometimes happens that a subject may be in great demand and provided a co-ordinator can be found a second group may be formed, perhaps at a different level of learning. However, there is no guarantee that every demand can be satisfied – the success of the self-help philosophy is entirely dependent on the response from members.

The Dunstable branch has a wide-ranging programme of study and recreation to reflect the needs and interests of its members. Current subjects include Family History, Gardening, Languages, Scrabble, Embroidery, Patchwork, Music, Art Appreciation, Bookworms, Computing, various Dancing and Walking/Rambling. Further groups are being started to meet demand, where possible.

In addition, Monthly General Meetings are held on the third Monday of each month at 1.15 p.m at the Methodist Church, The Square, Dunstable. We have a specialist speaker each month and also arrange social events and outings. A newsletter is produced quarterly to keep you up to date with what is going on at U3A (Dunstable).
